CONTEMPORARY ART
In his early years
as a painter, Merton
D. Simpson 's peers were artists like Romare Bearden and Hale
Woodruff. As a result of his long relationship with his colleagues,
the Gallery is fortunate to have an extensive collection of Black
art, from noted artists such as Romare Bearden, Bob Thompson, Charles
White and Norman Lewis. In addition, the Gallery has a collection
of contemporary artists, such as César and Sam Francis. We also
feature works from Henry O. Tanner and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet. The
Merton D. Simpson Gallery plays a tremendous role in the proliferation
of African American art, and participates each year in the National
Black Art Show. Click on thumbnails to show details.
